Montenegro

Montenegro, a small Balkan country of only 14km2 is home to five national parks and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  With an average of 250 sunny days per year, extended summer season and relatively mild climate throughout the year, Montenegro is a true paradise. The two UNESCO sites – Kotor and Durmitor are just a couple of hours drive from each other, giving you a chance to experience the two very diverse set of activities and landscapes in a single day.

Skadar Lake, the largest lake and biggest crypto depression on Balkan Peninsula is home to a number of endangered species including curly pelicans. Skadar Lake is famous for its diverse flora and fauna – more than 270 bird species, as well as numerous historic churches and culinary specialties.

Boka Bay cuts the Adriatic Montenegrin coast like a Norwegian Fjord. Once a hideout for pirates and smugglers, an important commercial trade hub and naval base has always been at a crossroad of cultures. Its historical, cultural and architectural value is inevitable. Old town Kotor and its surrounding charming towns Perast and Prčanj etc, are a UNESCO site since 1979.

Further inland, there are peaceful monasteries, dazzling wildlife reserves – National Park Biogradska gora – one of the three remaining rainforests in Europe, ski resorts such in Žabljak and Kolašin and archeological caves such as Đalovića pećina.

Montenegro has an authentic culinary culture, a perfect combination of Mediterranean and Oriental, once again presenting Montenegro as a country of contrasts. Wine regions in central part of the country offer a variety of quality wine selection. Many call it the Switzerland and the mesmerizing contrasting beauty of its landscapes inspired many artists, writers, emperors and celebrities throughout the history.

Although it’s small in size, the country is most definitely an adventurous, exciting all-season destination with endless activities choices and ways to experience it.

Durmitor

We have been very careful when choosing the location for Lago di Monte estate. Durmitor National park, a unique nature spot has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980 with international recognition dating back to 1976 when the Tara River Basin became a biosphere reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. Durmitor is a stunning limestone massif located in Northern Montenegro and belonging to the Dinaric Alps or Dinarides. It is also the name of Montenegro's largest protected area, the Durmitor National Park, which constitutes the heart of a landscape shaped by glaciers, numerous rivers and underground streams of which are embedded in the much larger Tara River Basin Biosphere Reserve. Out of 150 over 2000m high mountain peaks in Montenegro, Durmitor mountain range is home to 48 of them with the highest one - Bobotov kuk - reaching up to 2.523m. It's known for its many mountain lakes - the „mountain eyes“– Black lake being the biggest and most impressive one. The national park is known for its many canyons and hundreds of clear mountain water springs. Tara river canyon, a true jewel of nature is the deepest canyon in Europe and the second biggest in the world. Durmitor is a unique, picturesque area with a diverse ecosystem.

The rich, layered cultural and historical heritage of Durmitor can be traced from the earliest prehistoric eras to the present day, by continuously changing influences of different cultures. National spiritual creativity expressed through legends and myths, anecdotes and proverbs, epic poetry and partisan songs, inspired by nature represents the special value of cultural traditions.

National Park Durmitor has many paved cycling and hiking routes leading to some of the highest peaks that can be reached independently due to its excellent marking system, one of the best ones in Europe. Other activities such as sports fishing, rafting, snowshoeing and skiing are available as well.

Lago di Monte

The micro-location we have chosen for a perfect getaway called Lago di Monte is set on the shore of a very small and famous lake called Pošćensko jezero at 1487m above the sea level. Its depth is max. 3.6m, which the lake usually reaches during spring time, when the surrounding snow melts. The lake is characterized by relatively low temperatures, sometimes reaching up to 20 degrees in the summer season. During the winter, surface of the lake tends to freeze and the ice cover retains over 60 days which makes this place an idyllic, perfect winter setting. One of its characteristics is high level of water transparency. Our resort has a tranquil backdrop of dark emerald pine forests radiating aromatic scents.

Lago di Monte is a 6 acres estate with lake, forests and green grass fields perfect for all season relaxation and adventure. It has one of the best views of Durmitor’s highest peak – Bobotov Kuk, which is usually snow covered throughout the year. It has a good geographical position and get plenty of sun due to its south-west orientation. All the main popular activities of Durmitor region are within an immediate reach – hiking, climbing, cycling, skiing, and other including touring of famous cultural heritage sites. The location is easily reached; it is only 8km away from Žabljak and just two hours drive away from Montenegro's capital – Podgorica.
